The Bard's Tale is surely a classic. It's one of the games setting the standard for computer roleplaying games. It's a different standard than the AD&D games or the Ultima series set, however it had and still has many fans. The game mostly focusses on slaying monsters and gaining levels to be able to defeat harder monsters etc. - but that's of course not all.
Your goal is to defeat the evil wizard Mangar who has taken over your hometown Skara Brae. He has frozen the surroundings of the city with a spell of Eternal Winter. To have a chance to challenge the powerful mage you have to build up your party of adventures and hunt monsters in various dungeons throughout the city. Finally you have to find a way into his stronghold.
This game was the first game I ever bought with my own money...

The Destiny Knight - the second part of the legendary Bard's Tale series. In my opinion the weakest part of the series. The game didn't change a lot - you still got your party of adventurers and the same character classes are available - with the addition of the archmage. This time you got to defeat Lagoth Zanta - a mighty, evil mage. He has broken the Destiny Wand which brought peace to the lands. Your task will not only be to fight Lagoth, but also to find the pieces of the Wand and reforge it.

The Thief of Fate - number three in the series and it marked the end of The Bard's Tale. Graphics and overall gameplay improved over the previous games. Not THAT much, but still... The bad guy you got to defeat this time is Tarjan. He wreaked havoc upon Skara Brae and its surroundings. You got to travel through seven dimensions to find the source for that - and well finally...face the Mad God Tarjan himself.
The game got more depth than the previous ones, but it lost a bit of the original Bard's Tale feeling in my opinion. Still a very good game though.
